One of the most beautiful views
When we were in New Zealand we decided to do this hike and despite we knew it was going to be hard, we couldn’t even get close with our imagination to how difficult it actually would be.
Probably the Roys Peak track is the most instagrammed in New Zealand. It’s a must do, we couldn’t skip it. It’s like as if you go to Italy for the first time and you don’t visit Rome.
Even though there’s a million pictures of it on Instagram and many describe it as a touristic walk, this hike is totally worth it. It’s a 6 hours return (it can take up to 8), tough, but very rewarding. We did it in the middle of summer and to avoid the heat and the crowd, we began our walk at 4am in the morning. It presents a series of zig zags some very steep, and almost never flat.
I hoped I could reach the top for sunrise, but I underestimated how hard it was and the sun rose when we were at two thirds of the track.
The spectacular light that surprised us was breathtaking nonetheless. The Wanaka Lake, its islands and the mighty mountains of the Southern Alps make a stunning backdrop to the alpine meadows and tussock grasslands.
I still remember as it was now when as the light came out at sunrise, everything became to look so amazing that we took it as an excuse to rest up a bit and admire the beautiful landscape getting shaped by the rising sun.
The view at the lookout is nothing short incredible and even though we didn’t go ahead after the lookout I am very happy with the view I was offered. I hope you like it.
