Of Sand and Sky
I had never seen the desert before.
I was stocked, surrounded by that landscape of sand, in a space so vast that it felt infinite. Not long before, when I realized that by walking 10 minutes from our campsite I could reach the sand dunes, I think I started shaking from the excitement.
Stockton Dunes in the Worimi Conservation Lands are the longest moving sand dunes of the southern hemisphere. Only 3 hours drive from Sydney, the reddish yellow sand extend along the Ocean for 32 kilometres. I visited the dunes twice in the four days we spent in that area.
The soft sand let my feet sink at every step. The sky was so empty that I was expecting to go back one night and shoot a panoramic astro, but it was so unbelievably humid that I kept wiping my lenses every few seconds. Unfortunately with those conditions it’s quite impossible to capture a photo of the night sky.
I was disoriented while I was trying to think what direction to take and where I wanted to go shooting. I admit that I didn’t plan my shot this time, so I didn’t know what composition I would take. Here’s some of my photos I took during my exploration.
It doesn’t look like, but it was also very windy, so I couldn’t even fly my drone. I kept exploring and went a bit deeper into the dunes, then composed a few more shots and called it the day.
If you read my article Five Photography Tips for Shooting Stunning Sunrises you know that I’m an early riser. So the following morning, I woke up very early to shoot a photo of the dunes hoping for a good light at sunrise. The humid weather was still quite annoying and after being bitten by several mosquitos, I made it to the dunes. Despite humidity and the fact that the lens filters of my camera were totally steamy I managed to compose something. Here’s the before and after. The sky was amazing, I hope you like it.
I would have loved to get away with some cool astro shots, but I was very happy nonetheless with the amazing scenario I was offered during my visit. All I know now is that I decided to go back to this magnificent place pretty soon!
Would you like to visit a desert one day or have you ever been to one? Let me know in the comments, I’d like to hear about your experience.
